IoT and its impact on the electronics industry

IoT items are devices which can communicate with other devices or the internet that connects us to something, for example a photo or piece of information.  On balance, it does not seem to matter about the contrasting definitions between M2M and IoT.  Many items are becoming connected, in different, smarter ways and each collect data. It is simply how the data is made available, from each device and how the data is used in the long term, which is the only difference here.


For instance, a smart meter provides information about energy consumption patterns.  As a result, a business can use this information to identify where wastage is, to work out how to improve its consumption to save money. Your oven can even be controlled remotely by a new app from LG, which enables the use of a smartwatch or phone to set the temperature before you reach home.

As a collective, we can use the internet, mobiles and an array of hand held devices to entertain others through sharing content because connecting and trusting people has become easier. In the long term, the power of IoT and M2M communication will make the world feel smaller, as the internet gets bigger. New whiz kids and digital natives on the block will create an everlasting supply of devices and consumer items that will connect to the internet. It is thought that by 2020, 50 billion objects will have been born and six will be cradled in the arms of each person to enhance their lifestyle like never before.


Although there are no winners or losers in this market at present, M2M communication is not new to the automotive industry.  Since 1995, hands-free voice calling, automated emergency response, remote diagnostics control, stolen vehicle recover and related location-based services have been available from General Motors.  Today there are just more items that have the possibly to be created thanks to the rapid growth of technology and societies that have a thirst to embrace it.


In the electronics industry today:

  • Semiconductor are rushing ahead to develop system on a chip (SoC) tailored for the IoT.
  • Intel’s Braswell SoC is aimed at mobile devices and includes a version of Android with a 64-bit kernel.
  • Intel has also announced systems for the IoT based on its Quark and Atom processors.
  • Broadcom has unveiled a new low-power, Bluetooth Smart SoC, called BCM20737, with RSA 4000-bit encryption and decryption support for securing data while it is being transferred.
  • ARM recently announced the new CPU design center in Taiwan that will focus on the development of ARM Cortex-M processors for IoT products.
  • ARM is also working with AMD to develop embedded chips such as the Hierofalcon 64-bit SoC for the IoT


Within the next few years another up thrust of new trends and technology will stand centre stage. High power embedded processors will be found in IoT “smart” devices. Moreover, connected devices will also be able to handle processing equivalent to today’s laptops and smartphones.
