When a well known security company required a hardware platform for its latest mobile product, they turned to BVM to engineer a system to host their software application. On the face of it the specification was simple, a modest performance PC housed in a flight safe case with a number of special interfaces for external connections and various specialist flash card readers, but hidden in the specification were a number of special requirements and security issues. Also the unit was to be powered by either mains or battery power and have an integral touch screen for display and control input.
BVM's engineers got to work to produce a “proof of concept”. This used major components from the BVM range with a few additional specialist items sourced externally. At the heart of the system is a 3.5” SBC running a VIA CPU. A specialist air safe battery and power supply were selected together with an environmentally protective flight case. The 8.4” touch screen and LCD were selected from BVMs standard range.
Special metalwork was created and the whole unit assembled inside the case. A plastic overlay completed the job providing a fully customised system in a relatively short timescale. Following this “proof of concept” the unit was approved and moved forward into full scale production where it is proving very successful for both BVM and the client company.
This is just one example of BVMs projects involving systems in flight cases for harsh environments.
