The Customer

Our customer is a global leader in the research, development, and production of innovative, software-driven thermal optimisation solutions for critical live environments. Their expertise spans key innovation areas, inclusive of  the Internet of Things (IoT), Edge computing, 3D visualisation, digital twins, data centre IT infrastructure management (DCIM), machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).

Their solutions harness next-generation technologies while leveraging deep expertise in heat transfer and thermodynamics, ensuring that their software reflects current best practices in critical facilities performance.

Customer Requirements

The customer required a custom 1U rack PC capable of supporting their bespoke Linux operating system. The solution needed to offer high reliability, robust performance – and the ability to handle intensive computational tasks. Additionally, our customer needed a compact design to fit within their existing server infrastructure and provide multiple high-speed network interfaces to support rapid data exchange. Scalability for ‘future proofing’ regarding system upgrade and remote management capabilities were also critical requirements of our final design.

Design Challenges

The primary challenge faced by the customer was ensuring continuous operation despite the potential for power outages. Their install critical live environments necessitated a highly reliable system with in-built redundancy to avoid any downtime. The existing infrastructure’s space constraints and the need for a seamless integration with their thermal optimisation software added to the complexity of the overall system design.

The solution; custom 1U Rack PC designed by BVM

To address these challenges, BVM designed and manufactured a bespoke 1U rack-mounted PC with the following key features:

  • Dual Redundant Power Supplies: The system incorporated two hot-swappable power supply units, each capable of handling the full system load independently. This redundancy ensured uninterrupted operation even if one power supply failed.
  • High-Performance Components:
    • Processor: 3.5 Single Board Computer, with Intel Elkhart Lake J6412 Processor, Wide Operating Temperature (-30°C to +70°C)
    • Memory: 8GB SODIMM, 3200 MHz DDR4, Wide Operating Temperature (-30°C to +70°C)
    • Storage: M.2 2242 SSD, NVMe – PCIe 4 x 4, 128GB Wide Operating Temperature (-30°C to +70°C)
  • Bespoke compact and heat-efficient design: The system was designed to fit within a 1U rack space, complying with the use of physical space in the customer’s data centre.
