Rugged Single Board Computing for a CubeSat Space Programme
A BVM CASE STUDY
Delivering Reliable Embedded Computing for Low Earth Orbit Applications
When a leading satellite technology company required compact, rugged embedded computing hardware for a CubeSat programme, they turned to BVM for a solution. With decades of experience supplying industrial computing platforms for demanding environments, BVM worked closely with the customer to identify a reliable single board computer capable of meeting the performance, environmental and delivery requirements of the project.
The application demanded proven industrial hardware that could withstand the challenges of operation in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) while fitting within the strict size, weight and power constraints of a CubeSat platform.
The Challenge
Space applications present some of the harshest operating conditions for electronic systems. Hardware must deliver dependable performance under extreme temperatures, vibration and long-term continuous operation, where maintenance or replacement is impossible. For this project, the customer required a compact embedded computing platform that offered:
- Small form factor suitable for CubeSat integration
- Reliable operation across a wide operating temperature range
- Industrial-grade reliability
- High-performance processing
- Rapid availability to support an aggressive development schedule
The challenge was to identify commercially available hardware that balanced performance, reliability and lead time without compromising the project timeline.

The Solutions
Following discussions with the customer, BVM recommended two industrial embedded computing platforms – DFI 770-ALF51 and AAEON de next-TGU8. Both platforms provide compact, high-performance computing in rugged industrial form factors, making them well suited to applications where size, power efficiency and reliability are critical.
- The AAEON de next-TGU8 delivers exceptional processing performance using onboard 11th Generation Intel Core processors while maintaining an extremely compact footprint. Designed for embedded edge computing applications, it provides extensive I/O connectivity and expansion capabilities despite its small size.
- The DFI 770-ALF51, based on Intel Atom E3900 Series processors, offers a highly reliable, low-power platform with industrial temperature support, making it an excellent choice for mission-critical embedded applications.
Both systems were selected for their proven industrial reliability, compact dimensions and wide operating temperature ranges, enabling the customer to continue development without introducing unnecessary design risk.
