As the opportunities for edge computing grow in their diversity, the pursuit of computing performance also increases. Industries have started to focus on how they effectively manage edge deployed devices and improvements around efficiencies for the synergy between devices for real-time response to events at the edge.

To meet these demands, DFI have introduced their new generation of EHL series embedded computing solutions, based on the ultra-low-power Intel® Atom™ x6000 SoC platforms that specifically enhance performance of edge computing and image processing. Through use of high-speed networks, all local ‘regional’ devices can be connected to accelerate applications for (example) kiosk, medical monitoring or mobile AGV/AMR – so events can be responded to in real time, consequently making the management of equipment more intelligent and more automated.

With the ever-increasing demands of IoT networks to provide real-time response, power efficiency and ambient temperature resilience at the edge, DFI has developed a suite of products around its EHL series which consist of industrial motherboards, computer on module (COM) and fanless embedded system PC’s with the Intel® Atom™ x6000 processors at their heart.  

Aside from having motherboards in form factors of 3.5” SBC and Mini-ITX, the EHL Series consists of COM modules in COM Express Compact and COM Express Mini formats – and small form factor industrial system PC’s that overcome environmental (temperature) deployment by operating efficiently at temperatures ranging from -40 to 85°C.

DFI EHL Series 5G Embedded Computers

For real-time response, the speed of data transmission is critical. The EHL series, via its Atom platform and signalling speed of PCIe Gen3, delivers 8 GT/s per channel for high-speed data and image transfer and storage. In terms of inter-device data transfer, the network speed has also been significantly improved from previous EHL generations via 2.5GLAN high-speed transmission and the EHL Series ability to connect via 5G cellular networks and WiFi 6 so they provide real-time services to edge devices.

For enhanced edge device manageability, the EHL product series supports vPro and AMT functionality on an Atom platform; previously this functionality was acheivable via desktop and server platforms. With vPro and AMT, the EHL series can not only monitor and manage remote devices via in-band signalling, but also automatically update, backup, and reboot the operating system through out-of-band (OoO) signalling – even when the operating system is down, reducing downtime and ensuring devices are up & running in an optimal condition at all times.

DFI’s latest release of its EHL embedded computing series provides for a full range of IoT device management optimisation, making the integration and collaboration between devices easier and in real-time. This brings an unprecedented smart and enhanced experience to the user for edge device monitoring across a range of applications such as outdoor digital advertising, factory data collection, robotic arm & CNC machine control, fleet management, infotainment systems for trains and bus, medical robots and smart energy – to name but a few.
